How to upgrade your WP-installation in 30 seconds

I had to upgrade several, actually seven, installations of Wordpress on a job recently. Needless to say, I had to find a way to do it as fast as possible, without risking anything. But how?

Well, I did it the easy way. This is by no means fool-proof, but what really is fool-proof when it comes to servers and computers. Luckily, WP stores every post and every page you’ve ever written in a database. And the design of your side and your plug-ins are stored in a folder called “WP-content” which you never touch when you upgrade your wp-installation anyway.

To say it this way; You could (I don’t recommend it tough..) do about anything you want with your WP-installation without risking much, as long as you never touch these files and folders:

wp-content (folder with your plug-ins and themes)
wp-config.php (the file with information about your database)

Everything else; well, if you f*** up, you could always fix it. No problem. So thats what I did. Here is the 30 second method to upgrade your WP-installation:

Download last version of WP from wordpress.org
Delete the folder wp-content, and leave everything else as it is (The file config.php is not included in the download).
Upload all the new files to your wp-installation.
Go to the upgrade page, typically http://www.yourdomain/wp-admin/upgrade.php
All done. Now you should see a page telling you that you have upgraded wp.

Ok, Wordpress.org will tell you that you should back up your database and disable your plug-ins before even trying to upgrade WP. But, I didn’t bother to do that.

And it worked out nicely.

NB! You really SHOULD follow what WP says about upgrading. This is just the method for those of you are lazy and have a lot of WPs to upgrade.
